Unavailable for work until further notice

Because I am going on a 12-month backpacking trip soon — and because I am fully booked out until I leave — I am now officially announcing that I am unavailable for work until further notice.

I have placed the following notice on the services, sites folio, and contact pages:

Notice: I am away on vacation for all of 2007. My services are currently unavailable until further notice. Please do not contact me with requests or offers of work at this time. Sorry for any inconvenience, and I hope that you can find alternative services elsewhere.

I have also struck out (but not removed) the text on the services and sites folio pages; so you can still see what I do, but you can also see that I'm not doing it right now.

You can still contact me using the contact form, but don't bother unless it's something non-work-related. I'm on holiday, OK? :-)

While I'm on vacation, I will still be publishing new thoughts from time to time. But apart from that, I won't be doing much work on this site.

What implications does this have for the category module?

The backpacking trip sounds great -- a welcome and well-deserved break from all the coding --- but I'm considering using the category module for a new drupal site, and I'm what plans you've got for its maintenance while you're away during 2007. For example, if security issues are uncovered, who will apply the fixes to the CVS tree?

All the best,

David.

category.module's maintenance

While your decision to seize this once-in-a-lifetime-opportunity seems to me absolutely right, I share David's fears about the maintenance of the category module. As much as we owe this groundbreaking module to you, its further development absolutely depends on your work - probably there's noone else understanding how it internally works...

If you have an idea who could best continue with maintenance, please assign him/her as co-maintainer. And please post your notice on the drupal project page, so people don't expect their issues to be immediately fixed!

I wish you a great time and a lot of experiences!

Best wishes from Germany, Pancho

New maintainer

Don't worry, guys: bdragon has kindly offered to take over maintenance of the category module. He is now the new owner of the category module, and I am (as of now) a secondary CVS maintainer for the module. Bdragon has been submitting bug fixes and other patches to the category module for several months already, and I believe that he's experienced and intelligent enough to handle all tasks involved in keeping the module maintained.

Good news

That's definitely good news and the new 1.1 version as well! Think, there's just a few more fixes to be done, and people (including me) wouldn't call it "buggy" anymore... Some clean-up in the category options would be helpful as well, but that's something for the issue queue...

Enjoy your trip!

What a relief, Jaza! I

What a relief, Jaza! I thought the module was going to probably wither away for lack of capable hands.

Wish you well for the trip.

Phew!

That's good news. I hope you have a grand year out.

David.

(Even better news from my point of view would be for category features to be integrated into core Drupal, but I know that's not within your gift. I've made a desultory attempt to lobby for it at http://drupal.org/node/110996#comment-195537)
